Tall Ships prove we are a global draw

The Tall Ships are proof that Northern Ireland is now in the premier league of destinations for international events, writes Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Nelson McCausland

I am, like many in Northern Ireland, looking forward to welcoming the Tall Ships back to Belfast this week. It is my hope that this major international event will bring the community and families together on the shores of Belfast Lough and on the quays of Belfast to recall the days when these magnificent vessels were not simply tourist attractions, but were working ships that carried exotic wares to our shores from faraway lands.

It is anticipated that 400,000 people will share in this nostalgic celebration of maritime heritage over the Tall Ships’ four-day visit.

It is sometimes hard to believe that 18 years have passed since the ships last visited Belfast.

At that time Northern Ireland was not considered a viable destination for major international events and it is a credit to the vision and commitment of the organisers and to the heartfelt support of the people that the event was such a massive success.

As the Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister I have been hugely encouraged by the range of events which take place across Northern Ireland throughout the year. There really is something for everyone.

Motorsports enthusiasts can revel in a great summer of racing by enjoying the Ulster Grand Prix or the Ulster Rally. There is also high-speed action at Nutt’s Corner with heats of the British Karting Championship.

For music fans there is a special opportunity to see internationally acclaimed bands in concert at a place immortalised in song — Carrickfergus Castle.

The castle will see appearances by Jools Holland and Status Quo later this month. In September the Open House Festival, which takes place in and around Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter, offers opportunities to see local and international musicians in concert and at more intimate gigs.

For families a highlight is the Northern Ireland International Airshow, which takes place at Portrush in September.

The event has developed its already impressive programme to include evening concerts and fireworks, making a visit to the show an ideal destination for a short break. I am passionate about our ability to celebrate the rich cultural diversity which exists in Northern Ireland.

It is about sharing and celebrating all our cultural perspectives.

I have attended a number of Orange cultural events, as well as the Ulster Pipe Band Championships, but have also visited the McCracken Irish language summer school and very much enjoyed the Ulster Youth Choir 10th anniversary concert at Clonard.

Culture can divide us, but can also unite us as long as we are committed to a shared and better future based on the principles of equality, diversity and interdependence. A future in which all cultures have their place.

Looking forward, I have just returned from a visit to the World Police and Fire Games in Vancouver, Canada, in preparation for 2013 when the Games will come to Northern Ireland.

In Canada, 10,000 fire fighters, police, prison officers, customs and other ‘enforcement officers’ came from around the world to compete in football, rugby, shooting, rowing, bowls, cycling and, for the first time, Gaelic football.

Bringing this international event to Northern Ireland could attract 25,000 visitors.

The 2013 Games will enhance Northern Ireland’s international reputation; it will showcase our talent and display our world famous hospitality and beautiful scenery to a global audience.

While Northern Ireland is geographically a small country, we have the ability to make it big when hosting international events and truly are punching above our weight in terms of culture, arts and sport.
