Apple ID hack - but where from?

By Giles Turnbull

Published 12/09/2012

Mystery surrounds claims by a hacking collective that it obtained more than 12 million Apple device ID numbers from an FBI computer.

The IDs themselves are just strings of numbers, each one tied to a particular Apple gadget.

But they could potentially be tied to other revealing data too, such as name, home address, and location history.

Apple said it had never handed over any data to the FBI, and the FBI said on Twitter that the hacker's claims were "totally false."

So who's telling the truth?

The jury's still out.
