Tesla, the electric car company, is going to announce a new battery for the home as well as a “very large” battery for utilities on April 30, it has said.

CEO Elon Musk had already pre-announced the event, tweeting that the company’s next big product would be announce on April 30 and that it was “not a car”.

But an email to investors released last night said that at the event the company will “introduce the Tesla home battery and a very large utility scale battery”.

The company said that at the event it will “explain the advantages of our solutions and why past battery options were not compelling”.

Tesla’s battery technology is expected to help speed up the move towards clean energy, allowing people to store up green power in their own homes.

It’s not clear whether the company will announce those pioneering technologies at the event, and when they will become commercially available.

The company has already revealed plans to build a Gigafactory — a huge, solar powered electric vehicle production plant — where it has said that it will build 500,000 cars by 2020. The plant will be a “net-zero energy” facility, harvesting as much power as it uses.
