Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has updated his status to “married”.
The social network pioneer and his 27-year-old long-term girlfriend Priscilla Chan took friends by surprise when they tied the knot at a small, private ceremony at his California home on Saturday.
The event capped off a busy week for the couple, coming just a day after Zuckerberg took his company public in one of the most anticipated stock offerings in Wall Street history on Friday.
Facebook was floated at a value of $104bn (£66bn) — now worth about the same as Disney and internet shopping giant Amazon.
Ms Chan graduated from medical school at the University of California, on Monday, the same day Zuckerberg turned 28.
The ceremony took place in Zuckerberg's backyard before fewer than 100 guests who all thought they were there to celebrate Ms Chan's graduation.
The couple met at Harvard and have been together for more than nine years.
They later moved to Palo Alto, California, where Facebook has its headquarters, and where Chan could continue her studies.
After the nuptials, it wasn’t long until the Facebook boss updated his relationship status to ‘married’, prompting more than 280,000 people to “like” it.
The update was accompanied by a photo of the smiling couple in wedding attire.
Zuckerberg has been notoriously keen to protect his private life.
It is understood that the couple had been planning the marriage for months but were waiting until Ms Chan had graduated to hold the wedding.
The timing was not tied to the Facebook flotation, it is understood.
Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest people on the planet. Born and brought up in New York, the 28-year-old developed an idea for the social networking site Facebook in his bedroom while studying at Harvard. Zuckerberg founded the site with three others in 2004 and eight years on, it is used by more than 900m people.
