Thousands of Facebook users are logging back in to their accounts this morning following a half-hour period when the site was down.

Users on the social networking giant reported an error message from 8.53am this morning when attempting to log in.

As well as the company's website, the smartphone and tablet apps were affected.

Facebook posted a message on its homepage, assuring users that 'we're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can."

The site resumed normal service at 9.24am.

In a statement released to the media, a spokesperson said: “Earlier this morning, we experienced an issue that prevented people from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time. We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100%. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Belfast Telegraph readers have been describing their experience of being briefly unable to log in:

Avinash Kumar: I didn't know the site stopped, thought the government bugged my line and the Feds were going to bust through my door. Literally packed half a bag.

Stewart Holden: I went downstairs and talked to my family. They seem like nice people.

John Marsden: I was at the gym and couldn't tag myself in!!!!!! This is a disgrace as no one knew I was there and hence I was better than them.

Todd Howell: I ran around outside yelling "I hate laundry" and "I am eating tacos" just to update my neighbors.

Veronica Morrow: I had nothing to do while at work!!!! It was horrible!

Dave Wood: I couldn't share my life affirming messages that I copy, paste and post to impress people. I was devastated.

Madge Murphy: I thought there was something wrong with my internet and TV now I have messed my tv up!!

Gerald Nakata: I was talking to new friends I made in Kurdistan, Pakistan, and India. I thought USA homeland security shut my internet down.

Other users took to Twitter to discuss the outage:

When Facebook goes down its like the end of the Truman show. Everybody wakes up and gets on with normal life.

Facebook is down. Time to write letters to all my friends about what I'm doing.

Facebook is back. Did you all survive the near end of the world?

"Where were you in the Great Facebook Crash of 2014, dad?"

"On Twitter son, but I Instagramed about it"
