iPhone 7 users drill hole in phones to 'access headphone jack' after YouTube video hoax

Published 23/09/2016

A YouTube video offering instructions on how to access the iPhone 7's non-existent headphone jack, by drilling a hole into the phone, appears to have fooled some owners of Apple's latest product.

Apple caused controversy when announcing the iPhone 7 when it revealed the new devices would no longer have a headphone jack, instead asking customers to connect headphones via the Lightning connector, or use wireless headsets.

Now YouTuber TeckRax has uploaded a video with the title 'Secret Hack to Get Headphone Jack on the iPhone 7'. It has almost 8 million views so far.

The description says: "This video is for those who don't want to get $159 wireless airpods or have to insert your headphones into an adapter every time you listen to music. "

And while many of the comments are from users trolling or playing along with the gag it appears that some YouTube users may have fallen for the prank.

Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller said ditching the 50-year-old jack came down to "courage to move on to something new".

Whether or not removing the jack is courageous on Apple's part is open to debate but trying to add one by drilling a hole in the smartphone is anything but.
