Twitter users were met with an error message.

Twitter users were left twiddling their thumbs on Thursday evening as the social media platform crashed for some users.

Users in Europe, Canada and the eastern United States reported outages but details of the cause were not immediately available.

The service went down just after 7:30 pm on Thursday.

"Something is technically wrong, Thanks for noticing--we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon" was the error message from the site.

Web users complained that they had no access to tweets or have the facility to tweet themselves.

Normal service now appears to have resumed.
