Twitter users were left twiddling their thumbs on Monday evening as the social media platform crashed.

"Something is technically wrong, Thanks for noticing--we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon" was the error message from the site which went down around 7.30pm.

Twitter technicians reported that the issue would be resolved shortly and "things will be back to normal soon".

The Twitter outage map indicated that the service was down over most of Europe and in several eastern parts of North America and Canada.

Web users complained that they had no access to tweets or have the facility to tweet themselves.

Mobile app users did not appear to be affected.

Twitter did not reveal the cause of the outage.
