It’s sun and games as Northern Ireland keeps sizzling

The glorious weather had sun seekers out in force at Belfast City Hall

Northern Ireland’s beaches and attractions can expect a bumper weekend as people get out and about to make the most of continuing balmy summer temperatures.

Temperatures of 23 degrees have already given an unfamiliarly Mediterranean feel to Northern Ireland — and the good times look set to last as the hot weather extends into next week.

It will be as warm as 24 degrees on Sunday — and even warmer on Monday, when it will be around 25, according to a MeteoGroup forecaster.

As with last month’s spell of warm weather, Castlederg in Co Tyrone is still Northern Ireland’s hottest spot.

Thermometers in the small town were climbing to 23 degrees yesterday, leaving many other parts of the UK in the shade.

A Meteogroup forecaster said easterly winds were responsible for the soaring temperatures in western parts.

“These easterly winds are creating a clear east and west divide. The east coat wind off the sea is keeping eastern areas cooler at around 15 or 16 degrees in some parts of the east of England and Scotland.”

Daytrippers on Sunday may opt for an excursion to the |National Trust’s Mount Stewart estate, where there will be |an afternoon of easy listening jazz.

The trust’s property in Springhill, Co Londonderry will step back in time on Sunday as staff in period costume turn back time to events in Springhill from the seventeenth century to the turbulent 1920s.

In Belfast, large crowds are expected at Carnmoney Hill, Cave Hill Country Park, Divis and the Black Mountain and other parks run by Belfast Hills Partnership.

And manufacturers of refreshments from ice cream to cider will hope for a sales boost from the hot weather as consumers try to keep cool.

But other businesses may fear a downturn in productivity as wily employees fake illnesses to enjoy the good weather.

Cooooooool, Seems funny that you are calling 24 Degrees a heat wave, Us ex pats down under in Perth WA call that mild . We reach to 42 degrees in Mid Summer. But lucky you we have heavy rain at the moment . Good on you all enjoy. Photos look good.

It really made me think back to my youth before the Troubles. I left Northern Ireland some 30 years ago for Australia. It's great to see the people of Belfast smile with such vigour and happiness. Although I don't remember the girls being so good looking then !

“Kids cooling down in the blistering heat wave by running through a burst fire hydrant in west Belfast” or so says the caption for photograph number 19. Don’t these people realise that such actions leave the surrounding area short of water for both domestic and fire fighting purposes?

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
