Severe flooding in Northern Ireland

Friday, 20 November 2009

There was flooding misery last night as heavy rain and strong winds battered Northern Ireland.

Fermanagh was worst hit suffering its 32nd successive day of rain yesterday across the county.

Part of the main road from Enniskillen to Dublin was closed between Belnaleck and Derrylin at Thompson’s Bridge.

Meanwhile a diversion was put in place between Belnaleck and Derrylin via Fivepoints and Kinawley.

Tractors were used to keep Killyhommon primary school in Boho open after flooding stopped teachers from getting to work and also used to ferry school meals to Killyhommon Primary in Boho.

There have been 32 consecutive days of rain in Co Fermanagh, twice the average rainfall for a winter month.

Fermanagh mayor Bertie Kerr said the flooding was “unbelievable”.

“The land is all flooded, crops ruined, the roads are badly hit too, around Brookborough they are impassable,” he said.

“We have never seen anything like it.”

Fallen trees caused chaos as roads were closed including Broughton Gardens in east Belfast.

Flooding also affected south Antrim where police issued warnings about the Airport Road between Glenavy and Crumlin, the Belfast Road between Templepatrick and Antrim and the Crumlin Road in Glenavy.

Londonderry was affected with a powercut in the Waterside area of the city mainly affecting the area including the Glenshane Road, Irish Street, Woodburn Park and the Dungiven Road. There were further reports of flooding in Cookstown, Magherafelt, Lisburn and on the road from Newtownards to Portaferry in Co Down.

Police have advised motorists to exercise caution on the roads, reduce speed, use the appropriate lighting and take extreme care at all times.

NI Water said it has put plans in place to cope with the flooding including mobilising staff throughout Northern Ireland, checking drainage and attending pumping stations, liaising closely with the Roads Service and Rivers Agency as well as alerting customer service staff to additional phone calls.

Its waterline phone number is 08457 440 088.

I live in fermanagh area and i have not had 32 days of rain. I have had two days of rain since the snow has started. I have only had freezing temps and i am unable to get out of my lane due to thick ice. no sign of it melting. Most people around me are in the same boat.

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
