Bette Midler is auctioning off dozens of pieces from her iconic wardrobe for charity.

The actress-and-singer is donating some of her most beloved looks from her 40-year career in November - with proceeds going to benefit the New York Restoration Project.

The auction will feature the black and white Valentino gown she wore to the 1992 Academy Awards and her famous mermaid costume.

Other items include elaborate stage costumes designed by Bob Mackie, vintage Emilio Pucci and costumes featured on record covers and in her array of films.

The sale also includes accessories - headdresses, stage sets and jewellery will also be available.

The auction is being organised by Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, and is expected to be a huge success.

The famous Delores Delago mermaid costume, which was worn by Bette at the Coliseum at Caesars Palace Las Vegas, is expected to fetch in the region of $1,500. Her Valentino Oscars gown will likely garner $1,500 when it goes up for sale.

Bette is thrilled with the dress, which she wore when she was nominated for best actress for her role in the 1991 film For the Boys.

"This has to be one of the most beautiful dresses I have ever owned. I was so happy to be going to the Academy Awards for a picture that my production company produced," she said about the dress.

"I didn't win, but I felt so wonderful in this dress. Mr. Valentino has been a friend for many years, and every time I see him I thank him again."

The auction will take place on November 12.

All proceeds will benefit the New York Restoration Project (NYRP), a non-profit organisation Bette created in 1995 to help beautify New York City's parks and public places.
