Dita Von Teese has shared her advice for successful vintage shopping.
The burlesque performer is known for her iconic retro style and her glamorous old-school Hollywood image.
The star explained how her collection of vintage clothing has taken her 25 years to build, during which time she has picked up some tips on choosing the best of what is available.
"Go for things that are fairly simplistic and have a nice shape,” Dita told InStyle.com.”I know I’m successful at shopping for vintage when people say, ‘Is that Galliano, Dior, Westwood, or Prada?’ And I say, ‘No, I bought it on eBay for $40!’”
To avoid looking old fashioned while wearing your vintage finds, Dita advised to keep an eye out for pieces with a fresh edge.
“Choose things that look modern,” Dita continued. “Notice, in modern clothes, where the references are in vintage. Look for the parallels between [modern designers] like Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier vintage clothing.”
Although she now has access to the high end designer vintage items that are considered collector items, the brunette revealed her first experiences of dressing in this style were very different.
Dita confessed her path into this genre of clothing was down to her not being able to afford any other garments before she was famous.
“I started wearing vintage because I couldn’t even afford designer jeans,” Dita confessed.
“I couldn’t keep up with my friends in high school so I bought vintage clothes that were cheaper.”
Dita has since gone onto make a success of her own vintage-inspired Decades collection which is a handpicked collection of pre-loved and second hand luxury clothing and accessories, as well as her own lingerie and capsule range of vintage-style dresses.
