Iris Apfel: Bad fashion makes me sick

Iris Apfel thinks people should be imprisoned for wearing bad clothes.

The 90-year-old fashion icon is a renowned muse with a love of fabrics. Her extensive clothing and jewellery collections have been displayed at the Costume Institute in New York.

Iris still loves discussing style, but is appalled by much of what she sees on the streets of New York City.

"It was fabulous [in the 50s], everyone looked beautiful. Now when I walk down Fifth Avenue in the summertime I just want to throw up. It seems that the fatter and uglier people are, the fewer clothes they wear. The shorts and flip-flops and tight jeans on butts that go from here to Poughkeepsie," she told British newspaper The Telegraph.

"I always say they should put people in jail for wearing clothes like that. Especially stretch jeans over size 10 [a UK size 14] - they should be outlawed. Ten years ago people were starting to look like slobs in New York, now it's an epidemic."

Celebrities are just as bad, according to Iris. Lindsay Lohan once requested Iris became her style teacher, but the elder lady turned her down.

She believes fashion isn't something which can be taught, as it's up to each person to work out what they like on their own.

Iris has also slammed the pieces stars wear to awards shows, most of which she finds uninspiring.

"Most of the young people today look dreadful. And celebrities look even worse. They don't know what to do with themselves," she fumed.

"At the Golden Globes and Oscars they all look alike - it seems like they're all wearing the same nightgown and this year nobody had any jewellery at all. Only Helen Mirren was wearing a beautiful necklace, but even she got it wrong because the necklace just ruined the dress. I think the designer must have wanted to kill himself when he saw her."
