Kate Winslet's striking magpie-inspired hat was created to "reflect her personality", it has been revealed.

The actress' milliner Natalie Ellner explained the inspiration behind the unusual headpiece Kate wore to collect her CBE, for services to drama, from Britain's Queen Elizabeth II yesterday.

The actress opted for a fittingly formal attire as she attended the prestigious prize giving ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London.

Looking elegant and classy, Kate wore a simple black Alexander McQueen skirt suit and traditional court shoes.

She added some drama to her look by topping off her appearance with a custom-made hat by up-and-coming designer Natalie.

The 31-year-old came up with the final product after inputting the elements of the McQueen outfit Kate picked, combined with Art Deco lamps and magpies.

"It's taken about a month to create, going backwards and forwards with Kate," Natalie explained to British newspaper the Telegraph. "She had a lot of input, it had to reflect her personality."

Natalie has collaborated with Kate before, when she was approached by the star to create a series of animal-themed sculptural hats for Kate and her family to wear to a private event this summer. These were inspired by a variety of wildlife including a fox, badger, bunny and peacock.

It was the actress's brief for Natalie to create such a bold and unique piece to wear at the ceremony.

"It's such an important, once-in-a-lifetime occasion, it's nice to have a statement piece…," Natalie explained. "This is what evolved."
