Mariah Carey loves making fragrance almost as much as she enjoys penning tunes.

The superstar will launch her new fragrance Mariah Carey Dreams in April.

Despite this being the American Idol judge's 12th scent, Mariah still considers herself a novice at her second-favourite profession.

“I humbly call myself a ‘perfumer-in-training’ because I love it so much,” Mariah told PEOPLE. “Almost as much as I love making music!”

Mariah enjoys all aspects of creating her vast array of scents, from designing the packaging to choosing which aromas to combine together. Her latest perfume is housed in a bottle shaped like a champagne flute. The official press release for the launch explained this is “a tribute to Carey’s festive nature".

“The process of creating a fragrance is exhilarating and it takes me to another place within my creative self,” Mariah explained.

The Mariah Carey Dreams signature scent contains notes of Madagascar vanilla, honeysuckle and salted caramel apple. Mariah chose these to reflect different stages of her life.

“Mariah Carey Dreams helps tell my story,” Mariah shared. “The different scents derive… from childhood to performing on the world’s stage, to being in love, to feeling loved.”

Mariah believes the fragrance is a "classic and exciting" addition to her range of scents. It will be sold exclusively at US store Kohl's from next month.
