Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were "painful" to work with on their newest project, their collaborator has joked.

The fashionista twins are the new creative directors of the sneaker brand Superga. Steve Madden is responsible for bringing the Italian line to America, and has been working closely with Mary-Kate and Ashley on launching the first-ever US store in SoHo.

The footwear designer has joked about his experience of working with the twins.

"Painful. Painful," he smiled to fashionista.com. "They're very demanding, they're very tough. You know, just tough, tough. They want what they want. And so we worked hard to get that done.

"They are difficult. They are exacting. They are a pain in the ass. But they're very good though."

Ashley says working with Steve was a natural process. The blonde beauty - who has fashion lines including The Row and Elizabeth James with her twin sister - is thrilled with how the collaboration has started.

"When we first met with Steve Madden, who we've collaborated with for a long, long time, I was wearing my old, beat-up Supergas and he said, 'Oh, I've been wanting to buy that company,' and I said, 'Well, you know, if you do, please think of us.' And now our styles for The Row have sold out in a matter of hours, when they first came online, and we're thrilled. Really, we are," she gushed to WWD.

Mary-Kate explained the style that has proved most popular with fans.

"You just want to grab all the little baby ones, the little cashmere baby ones. They're amazing," she added.
