Zooey Deschanel: I have hair icons

Zooey Deschanel gravitates to style icons who have "similar hair" to her.

The New Girl actress believes her trademark look has helped her secure an advertising campaign for hair care brand Pantene.

Zooey explained her blunt bangs and shoulder length brunette hair was not an intentional look she'd planned to carve out.

"I didn't ever decide that anything was a look for me. I have basically had brown hair and bangs since I had my very first hair cut. I've had various incarnations," Zooey revealed to Bella Sugar. "I grew my bangs out for a bit, and I've had a few different hair colours in movies. When I go back to the brown hair and my bangs it feels like a sigh of a relief, like I'm going back to me. I've always admired Audrey Hepburn and Linda Robson, they are both brunettes with bangs. I think sometimes you gravitate towards people who have similar hair to you."

When it comes to her make-up, Zooey likes the bare minimum of products on her face. The flawless star believes experimenting with cosmetics, skin care and style is an important part of growing up.

"I'm all about breaking beauty rules. I'm of the opinion that there aren't any rules. My face hates being scrubbed. I like to put as little as possible [on it]. I cleanse with cleansing oil instead of moisturiser. The more I put on my face the sadder it gets," she laughed. "I think facial oil helps keep your skin in its natural state. I like to encourage the thing I started out doing with my style which is as a teenager going to Salvation Army and getting things together for cheap. It's important to express yourself creatively when you are growing up. I encourage all young people to do it."
