When baby Maximilian Alexander Snodgrass was born his parents labelled him as their “little gem”.

Greg and Jennifer Snodgrass met in South Africa, but moved to Northern Ireland, where their boy was born on November 14.

Weighing 8lbs 12oz, the couple’s first child arrived at 11.20am at the Ulster Hospital, Dondonald.

Northern Ireland-born Jennifer was nervous about the birth — but the “great staff” put her at ease.

“It was a planned C-section. It was fine, it took a bit longer than expected, but the team looking after me were fantastic,” she said.

Cradling her baby, the new mum (41) said she did not spend too long in the maternity unit.

“I came in on the Monday morning at 8am. They were very busy — three C-sections were scheduled. I was first to be seen.

“Every step of the way we’ve been at this hospital, from six weeks’ pregnant. They have scanned me every week and it has always been here, so we got to know the midwives.

“When he was born, I can’t even tell you how I felt.”

The couple, who now live in Holywood, Co Down, can’t wait to get home to show him off.

Greg, a dealer development manager, said he has high hopes for his son’s sporting future.

“I did play rugby at university in South Africa. I love sports, so I’m hoping that he grows up wanting to play for Ireland.”

While family members are thousands of miles away, technology helps to share the joy.

“We will Skype my parents, Betty and Raymond in Australia. They are over helping my sister with her children,” added Greg.

It won’t be too long until both families can enjoy the newborn.

“We will take him back to South Africa in March to get him christened,” said Jennifer.

“My whole family are going back for a wedding, so we thought we’d go over at the same time.”

And the couple explained how they decided on their son’s name.

“We always liked Max,” added Jennifer. “We actually were not going to go for the full ‘Maximilian’, but it was my brother and Greg’s dad who said ‘Listen, give him the full title’.

“If it had of just been me, I would have just gone with Max, but I’m glad we chose Maximilian now. He is a little gem.”

Taurus:

This isn't a good time to make travel plans. Weather conditions and work responsibilities have a way of wreaking havoc with your schedule. Wait another few days before putting down a hefty deposit. Working behind the scenes will yield significant rewards. If someone asks you to serve as their assistant, go ahead and accept. The pay will be excellent and there will be a lot of fringe benefits, too. Don't talk about a neighbour's private life in mixed company.More
