Ulster hooker Andi Kyriacou is more used to the rough and tumble of the rugby pitch than the delicate task of nursing a baby.

But on Wednesday he gently cradled his first child after his wife, Rebecca (29), gave birth to a boy at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald. Ted Kyriacou came into the world at 8am on September 7 and weighed in at a sizeable 8lb 14oz.

The hooker — a player who shoulders quite a bit of responsibility on the pitch — suddenly found he has a lot more responsibility off the field as well.

“I didn’t mind whether it was a boy or girl,” said Andi, grinning. “I’m just made up that he’s healthy and sleeping at the minute.”

The couple met 10 years ago while living in the north-west of England and then moved to Belfast when Andi was signed for Ulster in April 2009.

He joined the Ulster rugby side from London club Saracens and previously played for Sale and Leeds. Rebecca teaches French and Spanish and has high hopes that Ted will take after her and be a linguist.

Baby Ted was due on his mum’s birthday, but arrived a day late. His maternal grandmother, Helen Crabtree, who had flown over with her husband, Michael, for the birth said he was “a great birthday present”.

Gemini:

You're anxious to put a plan into motion. Fortunately, you are able to charm a few reluctant holdouts into doing things your way. If you've developed a crush on someone, now is the time to confess it. Harbouring these feelings in secret will only make you miserable. It looks as if the prospects for a relationship are good, so long as your intentions are honourable. Playing with a person's heart will backfire miserably. Make sure your feelings are deep and true before embarking on an affair.More
