Love blossomed for Lisburn couple Ciara and Andrew Bird after they met in 2008 at a speed-dating event in the Cathedral Quarter of Belfast.

Ciara (32), a journalist from Belfast, and Andrew (33), a social care assistant from Drogheda, clicked immediately at the singles night in The Potthouse.

They swapped numbers and after a long phone chat met at the Duke of York pub for their first official date.

On Valentine’s Day in 2010 Andrew asked Ciara to marry him.

Ciara's mother provided Andrew with a little bit of guidance regarding an engagement ring for her daughter ahead of his proposal of marriage on February 14, two years ago.

“He got down on one knee at the Whistledown Hotel in Warrenpoint,” Ciara said. “It was all very traditional. There was a little bit of conspiring between Andrew and my Mum about the engagement ring, because she knows me so well.”

The Quinn and Bird families then set about organising the couples August 23 wedding.

It had a special Alice in Wonderland fairytale theme, including playing card wedding invitations.

Ciara and Andrew became husband and wife at St Matthias’s Church on the Glen Road.

A beautiful reception for 70 guests followed at the Whistledown Hotel, in Warrenpoint, which was the scene for Andrew’s romantic proposal.

The couple enjoyed every moment of their wedding day and took to the dancefloor for the first time as Mrs and Mrs Bird to the Michael Buble version of classic hit Stardust.

“We had a lovely day,” Ciara said. “Mary Rose Mc Grath designed me such a beautiful dress and the weather was also on our side.

“We are so glad we were able to celebrate it with our friends and family.”

Following a honeymoon to Paris, including a trip to Eurodisney, Ciara and Andrew are now home in Lisburn and enjoying married life.

“We want to thank our parents, Maura and Brian Quinn and Maria and Johnny Bird, for all their support,” Ciara said.

“Our day was wonderful. It was over very quickly. It’s lovely to be married.”
