Just married: Edward and Emma Butler

EDWARD and Emma Butler fell in love after meeting at the Basement bar in Belfast.

Edward and Emma Butler fell in love after meeting at the Basement bar in Belfast. At their first encounter, Edward (34), an engineer from Bangor, convinced Emma (35), a school teacher from Carnmoney, to meet him for coffee the next day.

The date was filled with plenty of laughter and from then on the couple would regularly meet at Clements coffee shop in Stranmillis.

When Edward's work took him away to Russia, he would find time to phone home to Emma every night.

It was during Christmas of 2010 when Edward and Emma were very ill with swine flu that Edward proposed for the first time.

He was lying on the sofa, while Emma was curled up on an armchair, and suggested if they “survived” their sickness, they should get married!

But on December 23, 2011 Edward was determined to propose properly, so he got down on one knee with the engagement ring the couple had specially made and asked Emma to be his wife.

“Edward shuffled into the bedroom carrying a huge mug of coffee and on reaching his side of the bed, dropped to one knee,” Emma said.

“He moved the coffee he brought me to reveal an open ring box and my gorgeous ring sparkling inside.

“It was a wonderful and romantic surprise proposal.

“So I had two proposals. Although Edward jokes that he was duped into marriage, as he was convinced that neither of us were going to survive the swine flu.”

Edward and Emma were married in Barcelona in front of 32 guests.

Emma wore a beautiful gown made by Belfast designer MaryRose McGrath for the service in a tiny church that had stunning views right across the Spanish city.

The happy couple's reception, with a five-course feast, was held in the wine cellar of the Can Cortada fortress.

Their first dance as Mrs and Mrs Butler was Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling In Love.

The Butlers are planning to honeymoon in Paris in October before returning to Barcelona to celebrate their first wedding anniversary and are very much enjoying married life.

“We are having a wonderful time,” Emma said.

“We are still prone to laughing when referring to each other as ‘my husband' and ‘my wife'.”
