My husband and I have been trying for three years to have a baby but without success. Now, out of the blue and without any intervention, I’m pregnant.

I should be over the moon, but instead I’m terrified as it seems I’m expecting twins. I just don’t know how I'm going to manage.

My mum and I are not close so I don't want to ask her for help but I just can’t see what else to do. If I tell my friends how I feel they'll think I don't want them and they all know how much we wanted a baby.

How on earth do other mums of twins manage? HS

FIONA SAYS: TWIN CHARITY CAN OFFER SUPPORT

Please tell your friends as I'm sure they will want to help you. Yes, they know you wanted a baby but you never expected two, and they will fully understand how overwhelmed you are feeling.

There is a lot to think about but you have time to prepare yourself so try not to be anxious.

First of all, very few multiple births go to full term so the chances are your twins will be born early, and may need to be looked after in a neonatal unit.

Talk to your midwife about this as it's a good idea to visit in advance so you know what to expect.

On average, twins arrive at 37 weeks, so both you and your husband should bear this in mind when it comes to work.

You should also start talking to other mums who have had twins to see how they manage. The best way of doing this is through TAMBA, the Twins and Multiple Births Association.

This is well worth joining because apart from the support, advice and information they offer, you can receive discounts on all kinds of necessities.
