I doubt doctor's advice

I am 83 years old and have lived on my own since my husband died. My doctor has said I have irritable bowel syndrome and told me to include more roughage in my diet.

However, I have read an article that says this is wrong and that roughage may be the problem.

Now I am not sure whether I should believe my doctor and I am concerned about some of the other things he has said. AD

FIONA SAYS: DON'T LOSE FAITH IN YOUR GP YET

The trouble with irritable bowel syndrome is that quite often what helps one person makes the condition worse for others.

I would suggest that you go back to your doctor and discuss things with him.

There are branded medications that may help and some people find that relaxation techniques also make a difference.

However, there is no harm in increasing your roughage first as this, generally, is good for most people. Perhaps that is why your doctor has suggested it first.
