Slender Roisin is happy to be the biggest loser in town

By Heather McGarrigle

A Glengormley woman is celebrating being named the greatest loser — after shedding nearly seven stone in just 11 months.

Roisin Girvan (33) was named Greatest Loser at her Mayfield Slimming World group after losing 6st 9lb to slim down to a trim size 10.

In an age of obesity epidemics and eating disorders, she believes simply eating what your body needs is the best way to stay slim and healthy.

Her group encourages members to eat filling foods like pasta, rice, lean meat and fish to lose weight without going hungry.

Slimming World representative Dawn Richardson thought Mrs Girvan deserved to show off her new figure and booked her into Debenhams for a surprise makeover.

Mrs Girvan enjoyed a session with the personal shopping team this week before having make-up applied by the professionals on the Mac counter.

Personal shopping advisers gave her tips on what clothes she should wear to show off her new svelte shape.

They recommended bright colours and fashionable styles Mrs Girvan wouldn’t have dreamed of wearing a year ago.

She said: “I used to hate clothes shopping and it’s hard to get used to having a new shape. I still automatically go for the long tops or things that cover me up.”

Mrs Girvan, who loves her new curves, said her life has changed as a result of her physical transformation, leaving her full of energy.

“A year ago you would never have got me in front of the camera but now my confidence has grown so much,” said the mother-of-one.

Her two jobs as a childminder and an auxiliary nurse in the Royal Victoria Hospital are physically demanding but she said that she can “do so much more” now that she has shed the pounds.

Gradually becoming more active has played as much a part as the dietary changes and Roisin now walks regularly.
