The average British woman owns 17 pairs of shoes and spends almost two-thirds of her time in heels, a new survey reveals.

The study commissioned by French liqueur brand Chambord found that almost half of respondents had bought shoes on impulse, with seven in 10 admitting buying items they have never worn.

Those behind the survey branded British women "Cut-price Carries" after it emerged that the typical spend on a pair of shoes was £34 - a far cry from the price of Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo designs favoured by the Sex And The City character.

Some 2,000 British women were polled as part of the survey.

It revealed that one in 10 admitted to owning more than 30 pairs.

Just under half said they had made a purchase after spotting "must-haves" in a shop window.

A third had brought a pair simply because they liked the colour, while 16% had brought shoes to look good for a date.

Chambord's Charlotte Ashburner said: "British women may shop like Carrie Bradshaw but they certainly don't spend like her.

"Our study showed we love our Sex And The City-style footwear, spending a massive 60% of our time in heels.

"But at the end of the day, while we all want to look good, when it comes to parting with our hard-earned cash we're opting for affordable luxury over expensive designer footwear."
