Signed photos of Manchester United legend George Best go under hammer

By Dick Barton

A signed black and white photograph of a young George Best is expected to sell for around £200 at auction.

The undated picture features Best wearing a Manchester United blazer, surrounded by schoolboy autograph hunters.

His signature, in fine black marker pen, is in the bottom corner.

The photograph goes under the hammer at Graham Budd Auctions in London on May 22, which coincidentally would have been the legend's 72nd birthday.

Three other signed photographs of Best will be auctioned together in one lot at the same sale and are expected to go for between £150 and £200.

Meanwhile, a rare medal awarded to a Belfast footballer more than 100 years ago could fetch around £250 at the London auction. The nine-carat gold Irish Challenge Cup runners-up medal was awarded to Belfast Celtic defender and former soldier Fred Barrett in 1915, at the very height of the Second World War.

It is engraved: 'Irish Football Association Est.1880 C.FC Runners Up, Irish Challenge Cup F.Barrett,1915.'
