Titanic: No flares in the lifeboats

As the lifeboats pulled away, there was the constant threat of being sunk by passengers who were in the water, swimming for their lives, and eager to board.

So the hard decision was made to extinguish the lamps that some had managed to bring onto the lifeboats from the ship. Later in that longest night the boats without lamps had to improvise flares to attract attention from any passing vessel that might save them.
