Nick Love to make The Sweeney film?

Nick Love is hoping he can finally bring The Sweeney to the big screen.

The British director said he had been thinking about making the movie for several years - and thinks 2010 could be the right time.

"I've been playing with making a film of The Sweeney for years and that's been in the offing, and we may have a go at doing it this year," he revealed.

Although the movie will have a contemporary setting, he's determined to stay true to the original series - which could explain why it's taken so long to get the movie off the ground.

The director of movies including The Football Factory and The Business explained: "Part of the reason it's been a struggle is because the studio that are involved in it are American and they wanted it to be more Americanised and I always said 'What's the point of calling it The Sweeney then, because it's an intrinsically British thing, and you've got to make it very British.'"

However, he remains hopeful that it will get made.

"I think we're reaching a place where we can all agree on it, because I'm not going to make a film as important as The Sweeney, and do it in a way that I don't want. I'd rather not make it," he said.

:: Nick's latest movie, The Firm, is released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 1.
