Shakira honoured by United Nations

Shakira has received a medal from the United Nations for her work to help impoverished children.

The 33-year-old Colombian pop star is a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and her Barefoot foundation provides nutrition to more than 6,000 children in Colombia.

The She Wolf singer is also a member of the Alas foundation that advocates for children across Latin America.

At a small ceremony in Geneva, UN labour chief Juan Somavia called Shakira a "true ambassador for children and young people, for quality education and social justice."

Shakira said in a statement that social, economic and environmental policies must focus on children and their education.

Last month the singer spoke to President Barack Obama about US policy on children.
