Army brigadier killed in Pakistan gun attack

A high-ranking army officer has been shot dead during a suspected Taliban attack in the Pakistani capital today.

Officials say two gunmen on a motorbike killed the brigadier and another soldier when they opened fire on an army jeep in a residential area of Islamabad.

The shooting was the latest in a series of almost daily attacks by Taliban militants which have killed more than 170 people in the past three weeks.

The upsurge in violence comes as the Pakistani army continues a major offensive against militants in the South Waziristan area, close to the border with Afghanistan.
