George W Bush has said that all Americans can be proud of the history they've made in electing their first black president.

Barack Obama won a landslide victory over his republican rival, John McCain.

George W Bush says Barack Obama's victory is a "triumph of the American story".

He remembered the situation of the country in 1968 and the fight for freedom by Martin Luther King.

"No matter how they cast their ballots, All Americans can be proud of the history that was made yesterday," he said.

"Across the county citizens voted in large numbers. They showed the watching world the vitality of America's democracy and the strides we have made towards a more perfect union."
