At least 25 killed in Rio de Janeiro gang clashes

At least 25 people have been confirmed dead in Rio de Janeiro following a major outbreak of violence between drug gangs in the Brazilian city over the weekend.

Most of the victims are suspected gang members, but the police say three innocent partygoers have also been killed.

A police helicopter was also shot down during the clashes, killing three officers.

The violence broke out on Saturday when criminals from Comando Vermelho gang tried to take over the drug business in Morro dos Macacos slum, which is controlled by the Amigos dosAmigos gang.
