Bin wagon wedding carriage

A newly-married couple of refuse lorry drivers travelled to their reception in style today - in a bin wagon.

Claire Fallon, 43, met her new husband Paul Worthy, 38, at Sunderland City Council where they both work, manoeuvring their vehicles through the Wearside streets.

They were married at the Civic Centre in front of family and friends then posed for pictures in front of a red council bin wagon - freshly cleaned after it had been out on the rounds since 7am.

Ms Fallon, from Red House, had not told all her wedding guests about the novel mode of transport and there were peals of laughter when some saw the unusual carriage, complete with bow at the front and Just Married sign on the back.

After the wedding she said: "Both me and Paul work for the council and drive these things daily.

"It's something quirky and when we look back in years to come we will have a bit of a giggle."

Mr and Mrs Worthy then climbed into the cab - him in a grey wedding suit, her in traditional white wedding dress, clutching her bouquet.

Before the wedding, the bride explained she had asked for permission from bosses to borrow the £127,000 Mercedes lorry.

"I spoke to one of our managers and he went and saw the top gaffer and he said yes," she said.

"Obviously we'd have to pay for the fuel and pay for the driver - we'd have had to have done that if we hired a car anyway. Everybody pulled together and it's been lovely."
