They are feisty opponents who are not adverse to a bit of mud-slinging in the battle to be first past the post.

So who better to play the part of the Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat and Ukip party leaders than four micropigs.

The porcine politicians - dubbed David Hameron, Ed Swiliband, Pork Clegg and Nigel Forage respectively - were put through their paces as part of a twist on their daily enrichment programme at Pennywell Farm in Buckfastleigh, Devon.

The Pennywell Bacon Stakes Steeplechase special General Election pig race saw the Tory candidate romp to victory ahead of its Ukip rival, with Ed Swiliband, Pork Clegg and a fifth pig representing all other parties bringing up the rear.

And the race was not without dirty tactics - the Ukip micropig ducking a hurdle in an effort to steal a march on the other contestants.

Pennywell's Valerie Bickford-Beers said: "The election is the only thing people seem to be talking about at the moment so we just thought we would have a bit of fun with it.

"The pigs get to run every day anyway as part of their enrichment.

"People always associate pigs will rolling in the mud, but we actually think our race was probably a lot cleaner than the battle for Number 10."

Press Association photographer Ben Birchall added: "Hameron got off to a good start. He was well ahead in the end - he was quite nippy.

"I also saw Forage sneak under one of the barriers so there were a couple of underhand tactics."
