Balmoral Show 2016 - 'The atmosphere and buzz about the place is just great'

First-time visitors and veterans alike tell us what they love about big event

By Linda Stewart

Stewart Wilson (67), Lisburn, retired civil servant: I've enjoyed most of it so far. I just like it all! The sunshine makes it. The kids loved the children's farm - they had to be pulled out of it.

Helen Minford (31), Templepatrick, works in a building society

I like the shopping village and the Eikon centre and seeing all the stalls. I don't think they had that last year. I like the food and drink village and doing all the tasting sessions, and my wee boy likes the machinery.

Colin Todd (45) Lisburn, farmer

I have been in the cattle shed all morning and the best thing that I've seen is my Charolais heifer! I've been coming for the last 10 years at least. I enjoy the competition.

Audrey Moore (51), Omagh, midwife

I love the cows and I love the Ayrshires. The cattle shed brings back memories of being a farmer's daughter.

Alan Fraser (63), Lisburn, ex-Linfield player and ex-Glenavon manager, with grandson Alfie Bowen (2)

The atmosphere is great and so is the buzz about the place. No doubt the weather is the most important thing. It's a great arena for watching the showjumping.

William McMordie (29, left), Ballygowan, pedigree beef farmer

I like just getting to meet the customers and people I've been dealing with through business. Sometimes there are people you only see once a year.

Robbie Mulligan, Banbridge (91), farmer

The weather has improved - it's ideal at the moment. I was concerned with the Texel sheep watching them being judged. There is quite a reasonable show. For a Wednesday the crowd is very good. I would say they will be very satisfied with the crowd, although it was very slow going in.

Natasha Richards, (36), Lisburn

It's my first time at the show. I liked the motorbikes. and I loved watching the sheep shearing (top), it was fun too.

Gareth Keating (34), Armagh, councillor

My favourite things at the show were the motorbike people jumping up and down and in the air, which was pretty impressive. They were taking their lives in their hands. The Lisburn stall was pretty good, too, and they were giving out glasses of free white wine.
