Balmoral Show: New bionic loader a highlight as children flock to sheep stalls

By Chris McCullough

Thursday temperatures dipped somewhat at the Balmoral Show but it didn’t deter the thousands of people who made the trek to the showgrounds near Lisburn.

While the crowds were good there was a lack of the traditional visit from a member of the Royal family this time around.

Secretary of State Karen Bradley did, however, make an appearance along with a number of local politicians.

One of the highlights of the day was the introduction of a special new ‘Bionic’ machine developed by Blaney Motor Company based at Ahoghill.

Bionic by name, this machine is a small wheel loader with an impressive lift capacity and is driven by an operator who simply stands on the back of it.

Managing director of the company, Sean Blaney, explained: “It’s a diverse tool for a number of users including construction, landscaping, equestrian and agriculture.

“We therefore call it the Bionic due to its diversity and developed it due to a strong market demand for a small machine capable of many jobs.

“It is small enough to actually fit into a lift in case a user needed to transport it to different levels of a building. It really is Bionic by name and bionic by nature,” he said.

Walking around the showgrounds it was clear to see the exhibitors had something for everyone on display but one stand really did make everyone stop for a second look.

Valais Blacknose sheep may originally hail from Switzerland but they made a memorable debut at this year’s Balmoral Show.

Regarded as probably the cutest sheep around, the Valais Blacknose looks and feels like a huge ball of cotton wool making them a hit with children.

Exhibited by Richard Beattie from Omagh, these famous sheep took the day in their stride, lying in the sunshine.

Moving along a little, and it was milking time on the Lely exhibition where robots milked a small herd of cows during the day.

Adam Johnston, from Ballygawley, said it was amazing to watch automation in progress. “I’ve never seen this system in action before and it really is amazing how quickly the robot can milk a cow.

“It’s also a good stand to educate children as to where milk really comes from. I know farmers work hard to put the food on our tables and for me Balmoral Show really highlights the efforts they go to,” he said.

And talking about food, there were a few temptations in the Northern Ireland Food Pavilion to tantalise the taste buds including some rather tasty breads and sausages.
