As the Belfast Telegraph business desk dons its best frock and makes for a sharp exit to North Down, it's time to reflect on one of the highlights of the Northern Ireland economic year, at least in our eyes.

That's because we were celebrating the Belfast Telegraph Business Awards 2014, in association with British Airways, last night at the Culloden Hotel and may not be as clear-headed as we'd like when you read this.

I jest obviously – we are professionals and only indulge in builders' tea – but it's worth mentioning the array of talent, innovation and endeavour which was on show from the Northern Ireland business community which was on show last night.

AJ Power, Almac and BioKinetics are just some of the top-class companies picking up prizes, companies which represent all that is good in the Northern Ireland business world. All of the winners, and the runners up, are at the top of their game and taking their innovative products to customers not just here in Northern Ireland, but to markets around the world.

We can only marvel at how impressive their work is and be blown away at the successful legacy they've already created.

But we need more of their ilk, more innovators, more risk takers and more out-and-out entrepreneurs.

To our winners and runners up we say well done, and to the rest of the business world we look forward to seeing you on the stage next year.

Your economy needs you.
