British Institute of Facilities Management Ireland Conference looks good... on paper!

By Margaret Canning

The paperless office has been much discussed but seems as far away as ever – particularly if you work in the newspaper industry. But this year's British Institute of Facilities Management Ireland Conference, which takes place at Belfast's Titanic Quarter in November, is trying to be entirely paperless.

This year's conference – Workplace, People & You – is sponsored by Aramark and H&J Martin Facilities Management and will address the increasing pressures facing organisations in both the public and private sectors. And let's face it, the tyranny of being surrounded by paper in an already cluttered office can form a pressure of its own.

Facilities management is the process of keeping buildings running smoothly, including maintenance, repair works, and support services such as back office support, payments processing and procurement.

Delegates at November's conference will hear from a diverse line-up of industry experts on the art of facilities management – not the most glamorous of sectors, but one which does provide business opportunities.

Stephen Welch of the BIFM said: "We believe this is the first ever paperless conference to be held in Northern Ireland and like all organisations we are fully aware of our responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment, but it also gives us a chance to show delegates ways to better engage and interact with their colleagues." The conference will address issues like social media, shared spaces and new technologies. If there's no paper around, that's one less thing to manage.
