Even money-making machine can lose cash

It turns out that it's difficult to turn a profit even if you have access to a machine which can print money.

News that banknote printer De La Rue has seen its profits fall by more than half over the last year will come as a surprise but its shareholders won't be too unhappy.

The company, which produces notes for 150 countries around the world, still made a profit of £58m despite production problems which hit its bottom line.

Last year it ran into issues while printing Indian rupees and has since had to invest heavily in capital equipment.

And the company may be the first to know about Greece's future in the euro.

If Greece heads back to the drachma it will more than likely be De La Rue who will get the print order.
