Our £2m conference isn't rocket science

By David Elliott

It's time to get your rulers out. Belfast has managed to swing another big conference, one which is going to bring no less than 1,000 scientists and engineers to the city in 2018.

A close-fought competition saw the city go up against the likes of Germany and Glasgow, but it turns out the good people from the International Measurement Confederation want to come to Belfast in a couple of years' time.

The conference is worth nearly £2m to the city through the 6,000-odd bed nights which will be booked with hoteliers here and the win has helped bolster the city and also Northern Ireland's reputation as a place to hold a conference.

The likes of the G8, MTV Music Awards and World Police and Fire Games have all helped to boost the image of the region and put it on the map of event planners the world over.

With any luck we can build on these successes with more conference wins and make Northern Ireland the must-see venue for some of the globe's biggest gatherings in the years to come.
