Company Snapshot: F.P. McCann Ltd.

Building for the future

By John Simpson

FP McCann is a family controlled business centred in Magherafelt.

The directors describe its main activities as being civil engineering contracting, quarrying and the manufacture of precast concrete products.

The company has recently registered its annual report for the year to the end of January 2012.

This report shows that the business has continued to expand through each of its main variables and, if this information had been available at the beginning of March (a demanding assumption for a year ending a month earlier) this business would have been included in the list of the Top 100 (largest) local businesses. In contrast to many other firms dependent on the level of activity in the construction sector, FP McCann has enjoyed a three-year period of improving business.

The results are described as coming from a reasonably good year of trading 'mindful of the difficult trading conditions that continue to exist in the markets in which we operate.'

Employment in the firm averaged 478 people in the most recent year. This compares with average employment of 322 people in 2005-6.

The balance sheet value of shareholders' funds rose to £47.9m in January 2012, compared to £42.2m in January 2009 and £19.3m in January 2006.
