Crumlin Road courthouse hotel plan downsized by developer

By John Mulgrew

A new hotel at the former Crumlin Road courthouse could now be smaller development, according to newly-filed plans.

Drawings show Signature Living's proposal will now include 71 rooms - rather than 160 - a restaurant, bar area and spa in the basement.

A design statement added: "There will also be a rooftop function suite to cater for large events, overlooking the hills to the west of the site."

Developer Lawrence Kenwright is building several hotels in Belfast, including a George Best-themed one in the Scottish Mutual Building.

His company has now applied for a "change of use and extensions and alterations to the existing courthouse".

It said: "The original building will be sympathetically restored and converted into a luxury hotel.

"Additional space for rooms, dining room and conference facilities wiIl be provided in a two-storey rooftop extension providing expansive views out over the hills to the west and the city to the south east."
