A new branch of the Canadian coffee and doughnut chain Tim Hortons could be set to open in Ballymena.

A planning application to turn the former former Frankie and Benny’s restaurant on Larne Road Link into a drive-through cafe with outdoor seating has been lodged with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

The company said it was unable to comment on the matter at this time.

Tim Hortons opened its first Belfast outlet on Fountain Street in May 2018, followed by a drive-through branch at Connswater Shopping Centre in December that year.

It also has locations in Glengormley, Cookstown and Coleraine, with a sixth due to open in Bangor.

Separately, another new development is in the pipeline for Ballymena.

The mixed-use facility, in the vicinity of a former car park on Southern Link Road, is expected to include a drive-through restaurant and a 24-hour filling station.
