Fish City Belfast among UK's top three healthiest fish and chips business
Fish City in Belfast has been announced as one of the top three healthiest fish and chip businesses in the UK.
The announcement was made on Tuesday morning by the National Fish and Chips Awards organised by Seafish.
Having already won Seafood Restaurant of the year, this announcement marks the end of a remarkable year for the business owners John and Grainne Lavery.
The restaurant based in the Ann Street area has a philosophy on sustainability and sourcing seafood.
Grainne stated: "This is one of our most coveted awards to date. This award means so much to me and my team as we have been working hard to ensure each dish we design is presented in a way which is appealing to the eye, while also contributing to our customer's health and wellbeing.
"We believe it is important through sourcing locally and sustainability, we use healthy and nutritious ingredients and to ensure that we can present in a way our customers make an informed choice."
The Healthy Eating Award is assessed on menu diversification and innovation, staff training and knowledge of product contents and encouraging healthier options to the public.
John confirmed: "I prepare fresh batter each morning to my own recipe and I ensure that our oil is changed daily. Our menu includes gluten free and vegetarian options and we continue to design new initiatives and dished for our customers.
"As part of our healthy eating drive, we are working with schools to deliver a ‘Kids Club’, educating children about the benefits of healthy food choices. This is extremely successful and during Seafood week, we ran a promotion for kids to eat free, as long as they ordered seafood!
Mr Lavery added: "The benefits of eating fish are wide ranging and we aim to encourage children to eat more different types, while also introducing children who never tried it before. It is a sustainable source of nutrition that is important to a healthy diet."
The winner of the Healthy Eating 'Fish and Chips' Award will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards' in London on January 2018.
