Retail giant Henderson Group - which owns Spar - has been given planning permission for a new storage and distribution warehouse as part of a £20m redevelopment.

The new facilities at Mallusk will be built on Henderson's regional distribution centre.

Last year, the food sales giant opened a £12.5m warehouse at the Co Antrim site which it said was designed to "streamline logistics".

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council's planning committee chairman, councillor Philip Brett said: "This is great news for Mallusk.

"The Henderson Group plays an integral part in the Mallusk community and has been based here for many years.

"These improvements form an important part of the ongoing £20m redevelopment investment by Henderson Group and will ensure further construction jobs in the borough which will strengthen our economic position," the councillor added.

Mr Brett also praised the speed and efficiency with which the planning application was processed saying that this is a key factor to promoting business confidence in the borough.
