Northern Ireland shoppers could soon be using their phones to scan and pay for groceries in hundreds of Spar supermarkets.

Henderson Technology, which is part of the Henderson Group, is planning to trial the Ubamarket 'scan, pay and go' app with its EDGEPoS system, which is installed in over 450 Spar, Eurospar, Vivo, VicoXtra and Vivo Essentials stores.

The app - which will be initially tested in a small number of shops here - will allow customers to create shopping lists on their phone, guide them around the store to their items, scan goods as they shop and then pay by using their phone. Ubamarket's app will also work alongside Henderson Technology's new self-checkout systems which are appearing in a growing number of stores in Northern Ireland.

Will Broome, chief executive of Ubamarket, said the time is right for retailers to embrace technology to bridge the gap between in store and online shopping.

"Ubamarket provides retailers and consumers with a nimble scan-and-go system, allowing them to enjoy the convenient service offered on online platforms, in bricks and mortar stores," he said.

Head of Henderson Technology, Darren Nickels, said: "We know from the stores we own and operate in the group, that customer needs and expectations are changing, and we are ensuring our solutions meet those needs both now and into the future.

"We look forward to working with Ubamarket and our retailers across the globe to drive innovation in retail."
