Almost 200 Northern Ireland jobs to go with all Poundworld stores set to close

Almost 200 Poundworld employees in Northern Ireland are set to lose their jobs with the confirmation the chain will be closing all of its stores nationwide.

After staggered announcements of closures in recent days, it was confirmed on Thursday afternoon all of the budget retailers branches across the UK will close.

There are 12 Poundworld stores in Northern Ireland, employing a total of 188 employees with staff numbers at each branch ranging from 10 to 20.

It was announced earlier on Thursday that stores in Londonderry, Omagh, Armagh and Cookstown will close on July 26 or 29 with the loss of 62 jobs.

It then emerged that the Newtownabbey, Craigavon, Belfast Connswater, Belfast Cityside Retail Park, Belfast, Belfast Boucher Shopping Park and Bangor are also set to close.

On Wednesday it was announced that 33 members of staff across the Newtownards Castlebawn Retail Park store and the Donegall Place Belfast store will be laid off due to store closures.

The rest of the stores are expected to close by August 10.

"We would like to thank all the employees for their continued support and commitment during this difficult time," Clare Boardman joint administrator said.

"We are keeping staff appraised of developments as they happen."

Clare Boardman and Daniel Butters, restructuring partners at Deloitte, were appointed as joint administrators to the company on June 11.
