Hire group Briggs Equipment has acquired one of Northern Ireland's largest tool and plant hire businesses, Balloo Hire Centre.

Balloo employs just over 120 people across six locations in Belfast, Bangor, Lisburn, Ballyclare, Glenavy and Dublin. It will continue trading under its own name. Last year the company saw its turnover rise 25% to £11.6m, with pre-tax profits increasing by around a third to £2.9m.

Balloo's fleet includes 10,000 units across a range of 650 products. Its customers include Northern Ireland's film and TV industry, supplying big productions such as Game Of Thrones.

Briggs Equipment, which is the Hyster-Yale Group's exclusive UK distributor for its materials handling equipment, said the move represents the latest milestone in its programme of growth. It already has a base in Newtownabbey.

Peter Jones, Briggs Equipment's group managing director, said: "Balloo is one of the largest and fastest growing plant companies in the Northern Irish market and Briggs is committed to investing in and nurturing the business. Our focus is to support Balloo in continuing to provide excellent levels of service to their loyal and growing customer base."

Dan McCaffrey, managing director of Balloo, said: "Our two companies are a great fit for each other and this can only mean good things for our employees and customers."
