New jobs for The Boatyard gin distillery thanks to £100k backing

By Emma Deighan

A Co Fermanagh gin maker has created six new jobs and is expanding into the vodka market thanks to a fresh £100,000 investment.

The investment from the Growth Loan Fund will also help to support the company's relatively new exporting business in Switzerland, Denmark and the US.

Joe McGirr, owner of The Boatyard Distillery, which was set up in 2016, said: "... our double gin has secured over £250,000 of sales in its first year and all 1,200 bottles of our Old Tom gin sold out within 48 hours of launch. It is a very competitive market but we've managed to stand out among some strong local brands.

"The loan has enabled us to purchase two additional stills to increase the distillery's productivity. We've been working on our vodka product for the past year and we're excited to bring it to market this month."

Finance for the £50m Growth Loan Fund - which provides loans to growing Northern Ireland firms - has been provided by Invest NI and private investors, Northern Ireland Local Government Officers' Superannuation Committee (NILGOSC). CoFundNI and three angel investors also provided equity funding.
