£500k factory gets planning go-ahead on industrial site

By Clare Weir

A new £500,000 factory has been granted planning approval in Co Armagh.

AW Controls designs, manufactures, installs and commissions automated control systems which are used across the UK and Ireland with some products destined for the Far East and USA.

The site on the Moy Road, north of Armagh City will redevelop the former industrial site for the manufacture of these electronic control systems.

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan said the development could create around 15 jobs, not including those involved in the construction phase.

"This is a boost for the Armagh area," he said. "This proposal regenerates a former industrial site and will bring much needed local jobs and investment to the area.

"It is anticipated that five manufacturing jobs will be created now with the potential for another 10 over the next five years. It will also bring construction jobs in the short term. Increasing the availability of small business units should also encourage more businesses to the Armagh City and District Council area," he said.

"My officials worked closely with the company to ensure a speedy process turning this application around in under four months.

"Decisions like this all contribute towards my vision for a fast, fair and fit- for-purpose planning system that builds a better environment and a stronger economy," he added.
